Moscow's envoy to NATO warned Friday that Russia may have to rely on "brute military force" to earn respect on the world scene if all EU nations recognize Kosovo's independence and NATO oversteps its authority in Kosovo.
However, Dmitry Rogozin said Russia was not going to get involved in any armed confrontation over Kosovo.
He said some Western countries were ruining the entire system of international law by recognizing Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia.
"If the European Union works out a single position and NATO goes beyond its current mandate in Kosovo, these organizations will conflict with the United Nations," he said in a televised hookup from Brussels.
"And we, I think, will proceed from an assumption that to be respected, we have to use brute military force," Rogozin said.
And, related:
US calls on Russia to repudiate NATO envoy commentA senior US official on Friday called on Russia to repudiate a suggestion one of its officials that it may need to use military force to earn respect after Western governments recognized Kosovo over its objections.
The third-ranking official in the US State Department, Nicholas Burns, called the comments by Dmitry Rogozin Friday "highly irresponsible."
Burns, undersecretary of state for political affairs, also criticized the Russian government's strong language condemning the recognition this week of Kosovo's independence by the United States and some European countries.
"We strongly advise Russia to be more responsible in its public comments toward Kosovo," Burns said, responding to questions in an online written discussion. "Russia is isolated this week - very few countries are supporting its position."
It looks like we're getting closer... how many straws will it take to break the camel's back???

David,
So very ironic. The EU and USA collaborate to steal the Serbian Orthodox Church's religious capital and it is Russia in this case protesting! Solana, in my opinion, is making powerful moves towards global governance and Kosovo is the chip on his shoulder he is daring others to knock off.
Keep up the excellent reporting!

Thanks, Constance!
Yeah, Kosovo seems like a huge opportunity for Dr. Solana, along with Darfur. If it is in their plan for Russia to be confronted, Kosovo may be the catalyst they need. The tension is already there because of Russia's planned oil pipeline competing with the EU's, not to mention the animosity towards the US that has been surfacing, which could definitely come into play considering the growing EU/US cooperation. This could blow over and Russia may end up waving the white flag, in a sense(if you can't beat 'em, join em?) but if Herb was right, and we are now in the 70th week, the second seal should be next, and it sounds an awful lot like a world war to me. Then there's China poisoning us all the time... I guess we'll see. Praying for God's mercy on His elect... thanks again.
David
